As per the union budget 2012-13, tax has been imposed on air fare at 12.6 per cent. That means for every hundred rupee spent almost twelve rupee sixty paisa needs to be given to the government.
The Centre has been very keen to the Non Resident Indians in organising events such as Pravasi Karya Divas. But this decision to impose service tax on air fare is the first step towards charging the common man. Its too late for the government of Kerala to raise the issue only on the day before it starts to rise. The non resident keralites who are the backbone of the Kerala model of development are the worst hit. Keralites from the middle east are back once in a year to their home. Such an decision will lead to wide spread agitation in the minds of the common man.
Time has come for the common man to protest. Those business people who have the capacity to bear the service tax can adhere to this decision and they are the people who come for Pravasi Karya Divas and all. Unfortunately, the labour which works hard to earn a living in the middle east countries are denied of the rights. In fact the Central Government had imposed a heavy blow to the income of the common man.
Rahul Gandhi in his speech during the election campaign in Uttar Pradesh had pointed that Kerala Model of Development will be started. If he knew actually from where the model had been developed and how it is being maintained, then the central government will have never tried such an imposition of tax for the Non Residents.
